The rules for Four Concealed Pungs
- All four sets are concealed pungs: pungs you drew yourself, or concealed kongs
- No claimed pungs, and no exposed or promoted kongs (those sets are exposed)
- A pung completed by a discard counts as exposed: if you wait on two pairs (dual pung wait) and win on someone's discard, that pung is not concealed
- The pair can be anything and can come from a discard (on a single wait the four pungs stay concealed)
What Four Concealed Pungs does not combine with
- All Pungs (6): four pungs are implied
- Concealed Hand (2): the hand is always concealed
- Three Concealed Pungs (16) and Two Concealed Pungs (2)
Still counted: on a self-draw this site's engine adds Fully Concealed Hand (4, instead of Self-Drawn); a single wait adds Single Wait (1); the pungs' own Pung of Terminals or Honors, Dragon Pung, Prevalent and Seat Wind, and Full Flush, All Honors, Four Pure Shifted Pungs and so on are all added.
Self-draw, single wait, dual pung: the difference
What matters most is how the last tile arrives. All three hands are scored live by the game's code:
Self-drawn · East round · Seat wind: East
| Four Concealed Pungs | 64 |
| Fully Concealed Hand | 4 |
| Pung of Terminals or Honors | 1 |
| Total | 69 pt |
|---|
Reaches the 8-point minimum — a legal win.
Not counted (implied by a bigger fan): All Pungs、Self-Drawn
Won on a discard · East round · Seat wind: East
| Three Concealed Pungs | 16 |
| All Pungs | 6 |
| Concealed Hand | 2 |
| Pung of Terminals or Honors | 1 |
| Total | 25 pt |
|---|
Reaches the 8-point minimum — a legal win.
Won on a discard
| Four Concealed Pungs | 64 |
| Single Wait | 1 |
| Total | 65 pt |
|---|
Reaches the 8-point minimum — a legal win.
Not counted (implied by a bigger fan): All Pungs、Concealed Hand
So when you are ready, a single wait can win on a discard; a dual pung wait needs a self-draw to keep the 64 points (won on a discard it is still Three Concealed Pungs plus All Pungs, enough for 8).
How it relates to other fan
- Three Concealed Pungs: three concealed pungs, 16 points — one short, and the result when a dual pung wait wins on a discard.
- All Pungs: four pungs including claimed ones, 6 points; not counted with Four Concealed Pungs.
- Fully Concealed Hand: concealed and self-drawn, 4 points, added when Four Concealed Pungs is self-drawn.
- Two Concealed Kongs, Three Kongs: concealed kongs are concealed pungs, so kongs do not break it.
- Four Pure Shifted Pungs, All Honors, Full Flush often stack when the pungs share a suit or are all honors.
Odds of Four Concealed Pungs
All four pungs must be drawn yourself, without claiming. The chart counts pungs already in a 13-tile opening hand:
| Pungs already in the opening hand | Chance |
|---|---|
| 1+ sets | 8.7% |
| 2+ sets | 0.18% |
| 3+ sets | 0.00% |
Source: 1,000,000 random 13-tile deals (flowers already replaced).
One pung at the start happens about 8.7% of the time, two only 0.18%. Pairs are the raw material too: 4 or more pairs at the start is about 2.2%. In 4,000 computer-played hands (3,849 wins) Four Concealed Pungs appeared 0 times, while Three Concealed Pungs appeared in 0.10% of wins — too small a sample for Four Concealed Pungs itself; it only shows it is far rarer than three.
When to go for it
- Many pairs and a concealed pung or two: don't claim, let the pairs become pungs — the same no-claim style also builds Seven Pairs, so take whichever completes first.
- When ready, switch to a single wait if you can: a single wait can win on a discard, a dual pung wait only by self-draw.
- If others are fast and you are far away, a claimed pung turns it into All Pungs, which at 6 points still needs more to reach 8 — count first.
