Triple Pung in Chinese Official Mahjong (MCR): Points, Examples and Odds
In Chinese Official Mahjong, Triple Pung (三同刻) is worth 16 points: your winning hand has a pung (or kong) of the same number in each of the three suits — for example three 2 characters, three 2 dots and three 2 bamboo. One Triple Pung clears the 8-point minimum easily.

The rules for Triple Pung
- Three pungs (kongs count) of the same number, one each in characters, dots and bamboo
- Pungs may be claimed: no concealed requirement, and they need not be concealed pungs
- The fourth set can be a chow or a pung; the pair is free
- The same number in only two suits is a Double Pung, 2 points
What Triple Pung does not combine with
- Double Pung (2 points): any two of the three pungs would be a Double Pung, so under the non-repeat principle it is not scored
Everything else still counts: if the three pungs were self-built you also get Three Concealed Pungs; if the number is 1 or 9, each pung adds a Pung of Terminals or Honors; four pungs add All Pungs.

How it relates to other fan
- Double Pung: the same number pung in two suits, 2 points — usually already in hand when Triple Pung is half built.
- Mixed Triple Chow: the same chow in all three suits, 8 points. With a pair of the same number in all three suits you can pung for Triple Pung or use them in chows — Triple Pung scores more, Mixed Triple Chow is faster.
- Mixed Shifted Pungs: pungs stepping up by one across the suits (3 characters, 4 dots, 5 bamboo), 8 points.
- All Pungs and Three Concealed Pungs: pung fan that stack with it.
Triple Pung odds
Triple Pung needs three of the same number in each suit, with only four copies of each tile, so it leans heavily on claiming pungs. In 3,849 winning hands of bot play on this site it appeared only 4 times — too small a sample for a rate; it is simply a rare hand.
How to build a Triple Pung
- Start from a Double Pung: two suits already have the pung and the third has a pair — worth a try.
- Pung boldly: no concealed requirement; claim the third suit's tile as soon as it appears.
- Add All Pungs: with many pungs, go for All Pungs too, 22 points together.
- When to give up: two copies of the needed tile are already discarded or claimed — switch routes.
