The rules for All Even Pungs
- Four pungs or kongs plus one pair: no chows at all
- Pungs and pair use only 2, 4, 6 and 8 of the suits, no honors
- You may pung and kong; a concealed hand is not required
- Flowers don't matter; each one is worth 1 point on top (not toward the minimum)
Seven even pairs are not All Even Pungs: the fan needs four pungs, and Seven Pairs has none.
What All Even Pungs does not combine with
Under the non-repeat rule, All Even Pungs already implies these, so they are not counted:
- All Pungs (6 points): four pungs are All Pungs by definition
- All Simples (2 points): 2, 4, 6 and 8 are never terminals
- No Honors (1 point)
Every other pung-related fan still counts: Three or Two Concealed Pungs, Four Concealed Pungs, Double Pung, Triple Pung, melded and concealed kongs, One Voided Suit.

- All Pungs: All Even Pungs is All Pungs restricted to even tiles, and the value jumps from 6 to 24.

- Middle Tiles, Upper Four and Lower Four: these look at the range of numbers and don't conflict. Only 4s and 6s is also Middle Tiles, only 6s and 8s is Upper Four, only 2s and 4s is Lower Four — the points add up.
How often does All Even Pungs happen?
All Even Pungs needs four pungs and only 12 kinds of even tiles, which makes it far harder than All Pungs. All Even Pungs is not one of the target patterns of this site's AI; it only shows up by accident while the AI builds All Pungs or Triple Pung. In 3,849 AI wins it appeared 0 times, against 0.26% for All Pungs. That sample is far too small for a real rate — all we can say is that it is very rare.
Pungs grow out of pairs. A 13-tile opening hand has 4 or more pairs about 2.2% of the time, and those pairs would also have to be even, so All Even Pungs nearly always starts as an All Pungs hand whose pungs turn out to be even.
When to go for All Even Pungs
- You are already building All Pungs and most of your pairs and pungs are 2s, 4s, 6s and 8s.
- Break odd pairs first: a pair of 3s, 5s or 7s only leads to a plain All Pungs; discarding them is the way to 24 points.
- Pung freely: no concealed hand is required, so pung even tiles whenever they come.
- Opponents will notice: two exposed even pungs and not one odd tile in your discards, and experienced players hold back 2s, 4s, 6s and 8s.
When to give up: you still hold two or more odd pairs, or the wall is half gone and you are two pungs short. Go back to plain All Pungs and add a dragon pung or concealed pungs to reach 8. To try it yourself, play Chinese Official Mahjong online — the scoring is automatic.
