All Fives in Chinese Official Mahjong (MCR): Points, Examples and Odds

In Chinese Official Mahjong, All Fives (全带五) is worth 16 points: when you win, every one of the four sets and the pair contains a 5. The only usable sets are the chows 3-4-5, 4-5-6 and 5-6-7, a pung of 5s, and a pair of 5s.

The rules for All Fives

• All four sets contain a 5: chows only 3-4-5, 4-5-6 or 5-6-7; pungs (or kongs) only 555
• The pair must be a pair of 5s
• No honors
• Claiming is allowed, no concealed hand needed
• It depends on how the hand is split: if another reading of the same tiles leaves one set without a 5, that reading isn't All Fives (the engine picks the highest-scoring reading)

What All Fives does not combine with

• All Simples (2 points): sets with a 5 can never contain a 1 or 9
• No Honors (1 point)

How All Fives is scored

• All Simples: All Fives is always All Simples too, so All Simples is dropped.
• Middle Tiles: an All Fives hand made only of 4-5-6, 555 and 55 is Middle Tiles as well, and the points add up.
• Mixed Shifted Chows: 3-4-5, 4-5-6 and 5-6-7 spread over three suits is exactly Mixed Shifted Chows.
• Triple Pung: pungs of 5 characters, 5 dots and 5 bamboo.
• Outside Hand: the other "every set contains…" fan — a terminal or honor in every set, 4 points.

How often does All Fives happen?

Every set needs a 5, and there are only four 5s per suit, 12 in total; four sets plus the pair use at least six of them, so All Fives eats fives — if many 5s are already in the discards, it is dead. All Fives is not one of the target patterns of this site's AI and only appears by accident: in 3,849 AI wins it appeared 2 times, about 0.05%. The sample is too small for a rate; it is rare.

When to go for All Fives

• Plenty of 5s: at least three or four, plus shapes like 3-4, 4-6 and 6-7 that connect to a 5.
• Settle the pair first: it has to be a pair of 5s, so keep any you have.
• Add Mixed Shifted Chows: 3-4-5, 4-5-6 and 5-6-7 in three suits adds 6 points.
• No need to stay concealed: chow tiles that complete a set with a 5.

Does the pair have to be 5s?

Yes. All Fives requires a 5 in every set and in the pair, so the pair can only be a pair of 5s.

Can All Fives be All Pungs?

No. The only pung with a 5 is 555, at most three over three suits, so the fourth set must be a chow.

Does All Fives also score All Simples?

No. All Fives can't contain terminals, so it already includes All Simples, which is not counted under the non-repeat rule.
