Seat Wind in Chinese Official Mahjong (MCR): Points, Your Own Wind and Examples
In Chinese Official Mahjong, Seat Wind (门风刻) is worth 2 points: you win with a pung or kong of your own seat's wind. The dealer is East, the player to the dealer's right is South, opposite is West and to the left is North — so everyone's seat wind differs, and it moves when the deal passes.

The rules for Seat Wind
- The wind must match your seat: dealer East, then South, West, North
- Claimed pungs, concealed pungs and kongs all count
- A pair does not count
- If the same wind is also the round wind, Seat Wind and Prevalent Wind both count
What Seat Wind does not combine with
- Pung of Terminals or Honors: the seat-wind pung does not also score that point (1)
Big Four Winds (88) excludes Seat and Prevalent Wind; Little Four Winds and Big Three Winds still add them.
Scoring examples
Won on a discard · East round · Seat wind: West
| Half Flush | 6 |
| Seat Wind | 2 |
| Concealed Hand | 2 |
| Two Concealed Pungs | 2 |
| Total | 12 pt |
|---|
Reaches the 8-point minimum — a legal win.
Won on a discard · East round · Seat wind: East
| Concealed Hand | 2 |
| Pung of Terminals or Honors | 1 |
| Single Wait | 1 |
| Total | 4 pt |
|---|
Below 8 points — not allowed to win.
Seat Wind vs Prevalent Wind
| Depends on | Points | |
|---|---|---|
| Seat Wind | Your seat (dealer is East) | 2 |
| Prevalent Wind | The round (first round East) | 2 |
| Both | e.g. the dealer pungs East in the East round | 4 |
| Neither | Another player's wind | 1 (terminal/honor pung) |
So each player values the winds differently: in the East round the dealer's East pung is worth 4, South's East pung only 2 (prevalent), and South's own South pung 2 (seat).
Using Seat Wind to reach 8
Seat Wind is 2 points and, like a Dragon Pung, fits a 6-point route:
| Combination | Points |
|---|---|
| Seat Wind + Half Flush | 8 |
| Seat Wind + All Pungs | 8 |
| Seat Wind + Two Dragon Pungs | 8 |
